With a 2007 population of 70,000, Cannes is noted for its beautiful sandy beaches and as a playground for sophisticated pleasure seekers. In fact, most of the beaches in Cannes charge an entry fee to keep the riffraff out.

19th century aristocracy, spearheaded by English politician Lord Henry Peter Brougham turned this once sleepy fishing village into an exclusive classy resort, with many high-class gated communities dotting the hills. Tourism remains the main economic activity, however these days you will find a cluster of high tech industry in the hills beyond the main city.

Overlooking the west end of the port is Le Suquet, the closest thing Cannes has to an old town. There is a definite medieval flavor, with narrow streets and ramparts. There is a fabulous high end shopping district in Cannes, located mostly on theRue d.Antibes, Rue Felix Faure and the Boulevard de la Croisette, which is also the famous boulevard extending from the harbor around the bay. Whether you can afford the shops or not, window shopping is free and the experience is worth the stroll.
